A Romanian F-16 fighter jet has destroyed an explosive-laden maritime drone operating near a major European offshore energy site in the Black Sea, intensifying regional security concerns. The incident occurred on Thursday, and unfolded alongside a separate airspace violation along Romania's border, prompting sharp rebukes from national leaders and European Union officials who attributed the provocation to Moscow.

According to reporting by Yahoo News Australia, a commercial vessel first spotted the drifting marine drone at 06:28 local time. The craft was situated just a few hundred metres from active work at the Neptun Deep offshore gas project, positioned roughly 80 nautical miles east of the Romanian city of Constanța. Authorities determined the device presented an immediate danger to critical energy infrastructure and to hundreds of personnel operating at the site.

Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets scrambled in response. Bluewin reported that one of the jets successfully targeted the drifting vessel. Subsequently, a Coast Guard vessel carrying an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Romanian Navy was dispatched to the location to examine the debris.

Defence Minister Radu Miruță confirmed that the maritime drone was packed with explosives, and noted that authorities in Kyiv verified the device did not belong to Ukraine. Romanian President Nicușor Dan explicitly blamed Russia for the incident, condemning what he termed an escalation of irresponsible actions by Moscow. Dan vowed that Romania would continue defending itself alongside its NATO allies to repel future provocations, according to statements carried by the Mediafax news agency.

The targeted location is the Neptun Alpha platform, a cornerstone of the Neptun Deep development. The facility represents the largest natural gas project in Romania's section of the Black Sea and is jointly developed in equal shares by Petrom — a subsidiary of Austrian energy group OMV — and the Romanian state-owned enterprise Romgaz. Production at the site is scheduled to commence in 2027, with projections indicating it will transform Romania into the European Union's leading natural gas producer.

The maritime explosion occurred against a backdrop of widespread aerial activity. Earlier on Thursday, at 02:23 local time, Romanian military radar detected a cluster of aerial targets near the Ukrainian border north of Tulcea County, as Yahoo News Australia detailed. Two Spanish F-18 fighter jets participating in NATO air policing missions were scrambled alongside a Romanian IAR-330 SOCAT military helicopter. Authorities issued public alerts as a drone crossed into national airspace around 03:21 near Galați, eventually crashing four kilometres north-east of the village of Grindu and sparking a localized fire that quickly extinguished itself without causing injuries or structural damage.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded to the developments via social media and official remarks, characterizing the maritime and aerial events as an assault on the bloc.

"An escalating campaign of threats is underway, unsettling our citizens and seeking to divide our Union. This is hybrid warfare,"

Von der Leyen linked the events to broader defensive initiatives, pointing to the bloc's Readiness 2030 agenda, the European Drone Defence Initiative, and the Eastern Flank Watch as necessary measures to bolster member state capabilities.

Timeline of Thursday's Events

  • 02:23, Romanian military radar detects incoming aerial targets near the Ukrainian border, prompting the scrambling of Spanish F-18s and a military helicopter.
  • 03:21, A drone crosses into Romanian airspace near Galați, crashing shortly thereafter near Grindu in Tulcea County.
  • 06:28, A commercial vessel spots an explosive-laden sea drone near the Neptun Alpha platform in the Black Sea.
  • Morning, Romanian F-16 jets intercept the maritime drone; a naval bomb disposal unit subsequently neutralizes the threat.

The maritime drone incident follows a string of similar airspace breaches affecting world security along NATO's eastern flank. Just days prior, a Spanish F-18 intercepted another unauthorized aircraft entering Romanian airspace from Moldova. Officials noted that these events build upon multiple intercept missions carried out earlier in the year, cementing heightened operational readiness across Black Sea energy corridors.
