Russian missile and drone attacks injure at least 19 in Ukraine

Russian missile and drone attacks have injured at least 19 people across Ukraine, including children, in a sweeping overnight assault that targeted multiple regions and intensified a wider campaign against the country's transport infrastructure, authorities reported.

According to Newsday, the overnight onslaught struck more than 10 locations in Kyiv and damaged 33 sites in the surrounding region. Children among the injured included a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, according to Kyiv’s military administration. In Odesa, a separate residential strike damaged apartments and injured seven people, including two children, as reported by the State Emergency Service. Ukrainian air forces stated they destroyed or suppressed 131 aerial targets comprising ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, and decoys across the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions.

The escalation extends beyond urban centers into critical transport links. With Ukraine's airspace closed since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, rail transport has served as the primary means of supplying the army and moving civilian cargo. According to Eadaily citing Politico, Russia has conducted a targeted campaign against trains carrying cargo for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, destroying between 37 and 40 locomotives per month. More than 500 locomotives have been hit since the start of the special military operation, with over 60 percent of those impacts occurring in the final eight months. State rail operators noted that Russian forces have struck thousands of railway facilities over the course of the conflict.

Passenger transit has increasingly borne the brunt of these strikes. CBC reported that drones struck a passenger bus near the frontline city of Nikopol, killing four men and a woman, while injuring seven others. A passenger train in the Mykolaiv region was attacked multiple times, though all 168 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated without injury, according to acting regional governor Heorhii Reshetilov. Additional strikes hit transport assets near Kovel and near the border with Poland.

The cross-border spillover prompted immediate security concerns among NATO members. A jet-powered drone exploded approximately 4 kilometers from the Polish border near a petrol station in Dorohusk, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as cited by Yahoo News. Polish air defenses were activated, and fighter jets were scrambled after the drone approached airspace in the Lublin and Podkarpackie districts, temporarily suspending flight operations at local airports. The incident occurred just days after another drone struck near a railway line at Yahodyn shortly after a train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European security officials had passed through, as detailed by the BBC.

Amid the ongoing bombardment, diplomatic efforts to broker regional truces remain complicated. While U.S. Officials have pursued discussions regarding potential cessations of attacks on energy infrastructure and the Black Sea, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Kyiv has yet to see concrete readiness from Moscow to reciprocate. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have pursued retaliatory counter-operations, targeting military airfields and energy facilities inside Russian territory, including an oil refinery in Yaroslavl and a military airfield in Rostov.
