Berlin Pride van crash leaves one dead and 15 injured

An evening of celebration in the German capital transformed into tragedy on Saturday when a vehicle plowed into a crowd near Berlin's annual Christopher Street Day Pride event. According to reports, at least one person died and multiple others were injured, with law enforcement and medical sources confirming that some victims sustained life-threatening injuries. Tabloid newspaper Bild and the German news agency DPA reported casualties following the incident.

Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully in Berlin to celebrate at the pride parade, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. The festivities featured a massive parade concluding near the Brandenburg Gate, accompanied by music, dancing, and around eighty floats participating in the procession. The CSD parade ended on 17 June Street, which crosses Berlin's Tiergarten to the Brandenburg Gate, a venue that had hosted concerts since Friday. Organizers noted that the march was intended to send a message of democracy, tolerance, and diversity, commemorating the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York and combining a parade with political demands for equality and protection against discrimination. First held in West Berlin in 1979, the event has grown into a major fixture of the city's cultural and political calendar.

However, the joyful atmosphere was shattered late in the evening. Police and emergency services stated that a white van entered the Tiergarten park, which was just off the route that the pride march had passed along earlier. The vehicle hit several people before colliding with a tree. A heavily damaged white vehicle was found abandoned at the scene. Bild cited a witness as saying a white van drove into the crowd at high speed and a man then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Authorities immediately launched an intensive manhunt for potential suspects.

Police officers and fire department rescue crews swarmed the Tiergarten area, illuminating the zone between Potsdamer Platz and the southern side of the Tiergarten tunnel as they searched for evidence. Numerous ambulances and a large number of emergency service vehicles were present at the scene to attend to the injured.

Authorities abruptly halted the event around 10:15 p.m., and a band’s performance on stage was interrupted. Through social media posts on X, law enforcement called on everyone to leave the site of the event immediately, urging people to go home and avoid taking the route through the park. Police could not immediately say how many officers had been deployed, but confirmed that a lot of police personnel were active at the location.

While police have not commented on whether the incident was intentional or if the CSD was the target, political leaders expressed deep alarm. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner visited the scene and offered a stark assessment of the unfolding situation.

Wegner described the event as an attack on a free and open society. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also condemned what he termed a horrific act. Merz pledged alongside Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt that they would ensure the occurrence is fully investigated and punished.
