Husband of Tanzania's president dies while undergoing hospital treatment

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the first gentleman of Tanzania, passed away on Monday, 7 September 2026, after receiving treatment for a heart condition. According to official announcements, he died at 08:00 local time at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.

The death was announced by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi. In a statement reported by Standard Media, Vice-President Ndejembi said:

"It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the president of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,"

Ndejembi also extended condolences to the president, her family, relatives, and friends, noting that the former agricultural academic had been battling a cardiac ailment prior to his passing.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan maintained a remarkably low public profile throughout his life. He became Tanzania's first gentleman in 2021 when his wife took office as the country's first female president following the death of President John Magufuli. The couple married in 1978, long before President Samia entered national politics. They shared four children—three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, pursued a political career and serves as a member of Zanzibar's House of Representatives within the National Assembly.

President Hassan is serving a second term after winning a disputed election in 2025 with more than 97% of the vote. Candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred from running.

Following the announcement of his death, funeral arrangements began taking shape in Kizimkazi, a coastal village on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, where the family's native home is located. He said arrangements were being made for his burial in the family’s native Zanzibar, a semiautonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also extended condolences to Tanzania's first family, stating that his country stood with them during the difficult period. Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent condolences to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania, and adding:
