Heng Jing Ying dies from arterial gas embolism during Pulau Tioman dive

A 31-year-old Malaysian woman has died following a diving incident in the waters off Pulau Tioman. The victim, identified as Heng Jing Ying, was participating in a recreational diving excursion when she became separated from her group. Authorities have since concluded their investigation into the matter, classifying the event as a sudden death with no criminal elements identified.

The events leading to the tragedy began during a scheduled series of activities. Heng had been part of the "Aware Coral" programme organised by the Tioman Dive Buddy Centre, based in Kampung Genting. This activity ran from 17 July to 18 July. Following the conclusion of that programme, a separate fun dive was arranged for 19 July at Seafan, located at Batu Malang off Pulau Tulai.

The group for the fun dive consisted of ten participants in total, accompanied by one dive instructor and one dive master. According to Rompin police chief Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi, all participants were licensed divers. Despite their level of experience, the organisers conducted a mandatory safety briefing prior to the descent.

During the course of the dive, the group reached a depth of 17.6 metres. It was at this stage that Heng became separated from the others. Upon noticing her absence, the instructor initiated an immediate search operation to locate the missing diver. The search effort continued for a significant period before the instructor discovered Heng on the sandy seabed, situated in close proximity to the designated dive site.

Following her recovery, the dive team brought Heng onto the boat, where they immediately attempted to resuscitate her by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite these efforts, the diver remained unresponsive. She was subsequently transported to the Kampung Tekek Clinic for urgent medical attention. However, staff at the clinic determined that she had passed away.

Her body was later transferred to the Forensic Unit at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) to undergo a post-mortem examination. The results of the examination provided clarity regarding the medical circumstances of her death. Rompin police chief Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi stated that the post-mortem indicated the cause of death was arterial gas embolism (AGE).

Arterial gas embolism is a condition in which gas or air bubbles enter the arterial bloodstream. The police official confirmed the nature of the condition while providing updates on the investigation to the public on 22 July. With the completion of the forensic report and the conclusion of inquiries by law enforcement, the incident has been officially classified as a case of sudden death, with investigators finding no evidence of criminal involvement.
