Europe’s satellite launch ambitions take off as German rocket reaches orbit
German startup Isar Aerospace has successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Norway, marking a historic first for private spaceflight in continental Europe.
Europe's commercial space sector achieved a historic breakthrough on Saturday, when a rocket built by German startup Isar Aerospace reached orbit from the Arctic circle.
The uncrewed Spectrum rocket, measuring 28 metres in length and featuring two stages, blasted off from the Andoya spaceport located north of the Arctic Circle. The successful flight represents a dramatic reversal from the startup's initial attempt. That first rocket crashed into the sea shortly after take-off from the same Norwegian facility, an event that occurred 18 months prior to Saturday's success. Following months of delays caused by either technical or safety issues, the latest mission served as both a qualification flight for the vehicle and its inaugural payload delivery. The rocket carried five small satellites and an in-flight technological experiment, the company said.
Government officials across Europe praised the launch as a critical step toward continental independence. Germany's Ministry for Research, Technology and Space posted on X that the nation possesses spaceflight capabilities, hailing a milestone that demonstrates innovative strength and technical expertise. Norwegian Industry and Commerce Minister Cecilie Myrseth noted that the capability to launch satellites from Andoeya strengthens both Norwegian and European security during turbulent geopolitical times.
European leaders have increasingly voiced concerns over relying on external launch systems. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz previously visited the Andoeya facility alongside Norway's prime minister, stressing the need for domestic capacity and independence from foreign delivery systems. While France's ArianeGroup—a joint venture between Airbus and Safran—has long operated from French Guiana in South America, European nations are now aggressively investing in domestic launch sites.

The competitive landscape within Europe also includes Sweden's Esrange facility and Britain's SaxaVord Spaceport in the Scottish Shetland Islands, as multiple countries vie for a share of the growing commercial space market. Isar Aerospace, based in Bavaria, intends to scale up production significantly once the Spectrum rocket is ready for serial manufacturing. The company aims to produce more than 30 rockets per year near Munich, with orders already secured through 2028. Once ready for serial production, the Spectrum will be tasked with sending civilian and military satellites into low-Earth orbit a few hundred kilometres above the ground. In addition to its Norwegian operations, Isar is developing a second launch site in Canada.
Financial backing for these expansion efforts has arrived from multiple quarters. Isar announced it secured about €200 million ($232 million) from the European Space Agency to support new rocket development and expand testing and launch infrastructure. Meanwhile, broader national defense spending is also pivoting toward the final frontier. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has announced a €35 billion ($56 billion) drive by 2030 to build out space capacity.
As the commercial space industry evolves, attention turns toward how quickly startups like Isar can transition from successful qualification flights to reliable serial production. With orders booked for the coming years and additional infrastructure projects underway in North America, European firms are positioning themselves to capture a larger slice of the satellite launch market while reducing their reliance on overseas facilities.
