US judge blocks Trump administration ban on CNN and other media outlets

A federal judge has ordered the administration of President Donald Trump to immediately restore White House press access for journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

The legal battle began after the president announced a total ban on the three news organizations from the White House complex. According to reports, the decision followed a review of critical news clips shown to the president by a senior aide. Administration officials subsequently deactivated press credentials and barred reporters from the grounds.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who was nominated to the bench during the president's first term, granted the temporary restraining order after finding that the government deprived journalists of a constitutionally protected interest without proper notice or an opportunity to be heard. The judge noted that letters outlining the administration's objections were dispatched only after the credentials had already been revoked. During the emergency hearing, Justice Department attorney Michael Velchik defended the policy by arguing that access to the White House is a privilege rather than a constitutional right. The administration's legal filings also contended that the outlets failed to maintain basic standards of professionalism and decorum, accusing them of publishing sensitive or classified information and trafficking in falsehoods regarding national security issues. Letters sent to the organizations cited specific reports, including a CNN story detailing bunker construction, an MS NOW piece concerning leak investigations, and Politico coverage involving White House ballroom funding.

Attorneys for the media organizations forcefully rejected those justifications. Theodore Boutrous Jr., representing the outlets, argued that the national security rationale was a post-hoc fabrication manufactured only after the lawsuit was filed. Suddenly it’s a national security case, Boutrous told the court, emphasizing that the president's initial social media announcements focused exclusively on what he termed "fake news" and unfavorable coverage.

Judge Kelly expressed skepticism regarding the government's sudden shift toward national security arguments, observing that nothing in the public record prior to the litigation indicated that security concerns motivated the revocation. Furthermore, the judge criticized the administration's behavioral standards as so vague it hardly does the trick.

The conflict has reverberated across the broader media landscape. In an unprecedented display of professional solidarity, the five major U.S. Broadcasting networks—including ABC, CBS, Fox News, NBC, and CNN—halted their rotating pool coverage of presidential events. Consequently, recent remarks by the president at locations such as Joint Base Andrews and during diplomatic visits went without standard network camera crews operating pool microphones.

The temporary restraining order remains in effect for 14 days, designed to preserve the status quo while the court considers a longer-term injunction on the ban.
