India’s passenger vehicle market recorded strong performance during September 2026, according to data from Autopunditz. Total Vahan registrations reached 4,20,359 units during the month. This represented a 31.8% year-on-year increase compared with 3,18,907 units recorded in September 2025. Registrations also climbed 2.6% month-on-month from 4,09,528 units in August 2026.

Total registrations rose by more than 1.01 lakh units relative to the corresponding month of the previous year. Alongside Vahan portal data, separate manufacturer-level reporting via Rediff MoneyWiz highlighted that Tata Motors PV Sales Jump 15% in Sept, EV Sales Up 67% over the same period.

Market Leadership and Top Contenders

Maruti Suzuki remained India's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer by registrations. Vahan data cited by Autopunditz showed Maruti Suzuki registrations reached 1,69,826 units in September 2026, marking a 30.1% year-on-year increase that added nearly 39,300 units compared with September 2025. Month-on-month volumes remained almost unchanged from August, when registrations stood at 1,69,756 units. Maruti Suzuki's registration-based market share stood at 40.4%, down from 40.9% in September 2025, reflecting a 0.5 percentage-point decline despite volume growth. Separately, manufacturer dispatch data reported by Rediff MoneyWiz indicated that Maruti Suzuki Sales Soar 24% in September to 2.36 Lakh Units.

Mahindra captured second position with 57,817 registrations, securing 35.5% year-on-year growth and a 7.8% month-on-month increase. Its market share improved from 13.4% a year earlier to 13.8%. Mahindra finished only 1,661 units ahead of Tata Motors, illustrating an intensely contested race between the two automakers.

Tata Motors occupied third position with 56,156 registrations, representing a 28.1% year-on-year rise from 43,847 units. However, Tata Motors was among the few top-tier manufacturers to record a month-on-month volume decline, dropping 3.3% from 58,045 units in August 2026. Its registration market share stood at 13.4%, compared with 13.7% in September 2025.

Hyundai followed in fourth place with 50,201 registrations, growing 31.5% year-on-year and 4.4% month-on-month. Hyundai maintained a stable market share of 11.9%, compared with 12.0% in September 2025.

Challenger Brands and Growth Rates

Toyota registered 28,212 units, reflecting a 21.4% annual improvement and a 6.2% month-on-month rise. Its market share shifted from 7.3% a year earlier to 6.7%. Kia recorded stronger growth, with registrations rising 45.9% year-on-year to 26,668 units alongside a 9.7% month-on-month sales increase. Kia expanded its market share by 0.6 percentage points, moving from 5.7% to 6.3%.

Market concentration remained high, with the top six manufacturers together accounting for approximately 92.5% of total registrations. Additional established and niche brands also expanded their footprints during the month:

  • The combined Skoda-Volkswagen entity reached 8,468 units, up 13.8% year-on-year and 8.4% month-on-month.
  • MG Motor recorded 6,475 units, representing a 13.6% annual increase and 4.8% growth over August.
  • Honda grew 42.5% year-on-year to 5,283 units, improving its market share from 1.2% to 1.3%.
  • Nissan registrations more than doubled from 1,379 units a year earlier, climbing 115.2% year-on-year to 2,967 units while improving its market share from 0.4% to 0.7%.
  • VinFast registered 2,964 vehicles, up sharply from 2,239 units in August, securing 32.4% month-on-month growth.
  • BYD grew 14.2% year-on-year to 836 units while increasing month-on-month registrations by 47.4% from August's 567 units.
  • Citroen nearly doubled its annual figures from 406 units to 803 units, despite a minor month-on-month contraction of 2.9% from August.
