Trump threatens to annihilate Iran during UN speech

President Donald Trump delivered a fiery and highly anticipated address to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, warning that the Middle Eastern nation faces a stark choice between potential greatness or total destruction, according to reporting by the New York Post and ABC News. The speech, which took place at the UN’s Manhattan headquarters, included a direct threat to annihilate the Islamic Republic of Iran if leadership fails to secure a peace deal to end the ongoing conflict.

The escalation at the global summit follows months of volatile military and diplomatic maneuvers. Major combat operations were launched against Iran on Feb. 28, featuring joint United States and Israeli strikes targeting government, military, and infrastructure sites. Delegations from the U.S. And Iran subsequently entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending accord based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries. Those diplomatic efforts broke down as both sides continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz acting as the primary flashpoint. In August, Washington announced a crushing economic operation designed to force Tehran into submission, leading up to Tuesday's dramatic showdown at the United Nations.

Speaking to world leaders, Trump framed the conflict in stark ultimatum terms, questioning whether a deal could be reached to allow Iran to rebuild or if the U.S. Would act decisively. Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Trump asked the assembly, according to ABC News. He further stated that he does not believe an official agreement will be finalized before the upcoming midterm elections.

Yet, the public threats contrasted sharply with behind-the-scenes diplomatic contact in New York. Speaking to reporters during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump disclosed that his team had engaged in a three-hour meeting with the Iranian delegation at the UN. He called the encounter a very good meeting and maintained that he could not imagine why Iran would resist making a deal. It's a greatness, potential greatness or obliteration. Iranian leadership offered immediate defiance. Ahead of the U.N. Address, Iran's top negotiator and Parliament speaker, Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, blasted the American president during a veterans ceremony inside Iran. Trump can’t impose his power on Iran, Qalibaf declared, pledging that his country would stand firm against any warfare imposed by its adversaries. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi maintained a busy diplomatic schedule in New York, holding talks with Italian Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, as reported by Iranian officials.

Beyond the Iranian conflict, the New York Post reported that Trump widened his critique during his Manhattan address to target international judicial bodies and emerging technologies. He called for the entire International Criminal Court to resign, labeling the institution an evil group of people following its decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over actions in Gaza. Trump also addressed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, stating an intention to rein in the technology if necessary while bestowing upon it the nickname Super Intelligence, though he reiterated his opposition to formal international regulation of AI systems.
