NHS England public data gateway and UKHSA data dashboard share health data

New public data portals from NHS England, the UKHSA, and OHID provide access to hospital performance metrics, infectious disease surveillance, and health indicators. These resources aim to increase transparency as the healthcare system manages persistent operational challenges.

As the healthcare sector navigates persistent operational challenges, multiple digital gateways now provide the public and health professionals with access to national and regional Data. These resources, maintained by NHS England, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), consolidate information ranging from hospital waiting lists to infectious disease surveillance.

The NHS England public data gateway serves as the primary hub for monitoring institutional performance. It features visualisations of hospital provider profiles, comparative metrics for acute providers, and dedicated performance monitoring for mental health services. A central component of this gateway is the tracking of Referral to Treatment (RTT) waiting times and hospital mortality indicators. According to service documentation, this commitment to data transparency is a stated priority in the 10-year Health Plan.

Operating in parallel, the UKHSA data dashboard provides a broader surveillance view of public health, focusing on communicable diseases, healthcare-associated infections, and antimicrobial resistance. The portal tracks weekly PCR-positive rates for various respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza, and rhinovirus. Beyond viral surveillance, the dashboard monitors weekly cases of invasive group A streptococcal infection and weekly consultation rates for scarlet fever.

The UKHSA dashboard also integrates syndromic surveillance from the NHS 111 remote health system, reporting daily counts of triaged calls for acute respiratory infections. This is complemented by data on emergency department attendances for heat or sunstroke and COVID-19-like illnesses. Additionally, the platform tracks monthly counts for various bacteraemia infections, including E. Coli, C. Difficile, Klebsiella species, MRSA, MSSA, and P. Aeruginosa. Surveillance extends to antimicrobial stewardship, with monthly reporting on antibiotic consumption — measured in Defined Daily Doses per 1,000 inhabitants — in primary and secondary care, as well as resistance patterns for bacteria such as E. Coli, K. Pneumoniae, and E. Faecium.

For those tracking regional health disparities, the Health of the region data explorer offers a comparative view of England’s 9 regions and their local authorities. Developed by OHID, this tool supports joint strategic needs assessments and regional decision-making. The explorer provides snapshots of public health indicators designed to help local leaders contextualise national trends within their specific geographies.

These data initiatives arrive as the healthcare system manages what the British Medical Association describes as some of the most severe pressures in its 77-year history. While the COVID-19 pandemic is cited as a significant factor, the British Medical Association attributes these ongoing difficulties to years of inadequate planning and chronic under-resourcing.

The UKHSA portal also serves as an active alerting system for environmental threats. The dashboard carries weather health alerts in effect until Sunday 12 July at 9pm, providing early warnings when adverse temperatures are expected to impact population wellbeing.

Users of these portals are advised to note specific technical caveats regarding data presentation. For infectious disease reporting, UKHSA indicates that recent data, particularly for metrics like measles cases, is subject to a reporting delay period. As a result, reported figures for the most recent 4 weeks are likely to underestimate current activity. These services remain in a developmental phase, with the UKHSA dashboard currently classified as a beta service, actively soliciting user feedback to inform future iterations.
