The man accused of murdering former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe has now been formally charged with a terror plot targeting Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

According to Radionewshub and The Independent, Counter Terrorism Policing announced that Joshua Kerry, 28, of Byrley Road, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was charged with one count of preparation of terrorist acts under section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The authorization came directly from the Crown Prosecution Service following what officials described as a complex and intensive inquiry.

Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, noted via Malay Mail that prosecutors worked closely alongside investigators to determine sufficient evidence existed to bring the matter before the judiciary. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, emphasized the tireless efforts of detectives, analysts, and forensic experts working across multiple investigative lines.

The legal proceedings connect directly to the high-profile killing earlier this year of Ann Widdecombe, a 78-year-old Reform UK spokeswoman and veteran Conservative politician. Court hearings previously established that Widdecombe died on July 8 after being struck repeatedly with a hammer at her residence in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon. Her body was subsequently discovered face down on her kitchen floor by her gardener on the morning of July 9.

The widening terror probe has also thrown light back onto previous security incidents involving Nigel Farage. In August, counter-terrorism officers reopened an inquiry into an alleged firebomb attack at Farage's south London home that had initially been treated as an attempted burglary before being closed without arrests. Authorities confirmed that the renewed investigation identified a relevant line of inquiry that had not been pursued during the initial police response.

Political leaders responded swiftly to the developments. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood took to social media to share her concerns and extend sympathies. She wrote:

"I know the new charges made today will be extremely concerning. My profound sympathies are with Nigel Farage and his family. Let no one make any mistake: an attack on anyone in politics is an attack on us all. This case raises serious questions about the security of those in public life. We must use this as an opportunity to reset. Once parliament returns, I will update on our work to strengthen protections for those who choose to serve."

Reflecting on the broader climate of political safety, Olivia Field, chief executive of the Jo Cox Foundation, stated that violence and intimidation threaten British democracy and require a society-wide response ranging from educational reform to enhanced online safeguards.

What to Watch Next

  • Joshua Kerry is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, to face the new terror preparation charge alongside ongoing murder proceedings.
  • Counter Terrorism Policing will continue its active inquiries into the wider network of activity alleged between May 2024 and July 2026.
