UK PM links Iran to RAF Fairford air base plot

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has confirmed that the United Kingdom possesses strong indications linking Tehran to a security incident at a military installation used by American forces, marking the first time the British government has publicly blamed the Iranian regime for the episode.

The development follows a high-security alert that began in the early hours of Sunday in the Cotswolds village of Whelford, situated directly east of the RAF Fairford air base in western England. According to reporting from NBC News, authorities were alerted by two separate calls placed around the same time. One call was made to police by a member of the suspect group, while a local farmer also contacted emergency services after spotting three suspicious white vans blocking a rural road near the perimeter.

Officers detained five British nationals in their mid-20s on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences on Sunday. Police later confirmed that four of the men reside in Westminster and one in Camden in London. Counter-terrorism teams subsequently evacuated nearby homes and deployed a robot to examine the vehicles, capturing footage of a police-controlled blast that sent a fireball and smoke plume from the rear of one van as reported by the Daily Mail.

Despite the high-stakes nature of the operation, law enforcement officials announced that forensic examinations yielded no improvised explosive devices. Head of UK counter-terrorism policing Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor confirmed that officers recovered a quantity of petrol and large, mostly empty plastic drums from the vans. Investigators also examined whether the vans bore suspicious markings, noting that one vehicle displayed branding for Fuel 2You alongside a phone number formatted in a style predominantly used in Iran.

In recent months, American aircraft launched missions from the base to strike Iran, prompting warnings from Tehran that any facility utilized for such operations would be treated as a legitimate target. In July, the Iranian ambassador to London described the deployment of American bombers from the Gloucestershire site as an important matter for self-defence.

The decision by British police to release the five suspects on bail drew sharp public rebuke from Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong disappointment, stating that the individuals should not have been granted bail. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio similarly asserted that the suspected plot clearly involved the hand of a foreign actor.

In response to international reactions and domestic questions, Prime Minister Burnham defended the handling of the case. He emphasized that the suspects were released under the strictest possible bail conditions and insisted that British authorities maintain the strongest grip and closest control over the ongoing investigation. The Iranian Embassy in London issued a statement categorically rejecting and strongly condemning any speculations linking Tehran to the arrests.
