The Vorarlberg lighting manufacturer Zumtobel may have lost a lot of sales in the corona crisis, but is optimistic about the time after that. Reforms in the years before the crisis would now bear fruit, says company boss Alfred Felder. Although profit halved in the first half of the year (May to October 2020), the company remained clearly in the black, although sales fell by EUR 88 million.
“That makes us proud and also confident,” said Felder in an interview with the APA. He expects growth again next year, “because we have set the course so well”. In any case, he expects to stay in the black in the second half of the lean financial year.
Like many other companies, Zumtobel focused on digitizing business during the pandemic. Sales have shown that the high-tech presentation of offers and customer training in the virtual world have been so well received that some customers even now that they are allowed to travel say: ‘You don’t need to come’. The number of offers to customers has increased by 30 percent, but the completion rate is currently not as high as it used to be because many customers have less money for investments. All in all, there are great gains in efficiency: “You interact with customers much faster, you spend less time traveling and you save costs,” summarizes Felder. He assumes that travel will decrease significantly in the future.
Zumtobel also relies heavily on digitization in its product range. On the one hand, this is about getting as close as possible to sunlight during the day with the LED lights. On the other hand, thanks to sensors, the lighting systems in shops are built so that the lighting infrastructure can be used to offer new solutions, for example in supermarkets. This includes, on the one hand, sales promotion using light modulation and, on the other hand, recording customer behavior using sensors. Zumtobel also offers the necessary software for this, and for this the company has a subsidiary in Portugal with 50 software specialists, says Felder.
Zumtobel suffered a lot in March and April when the borders were closed and orders were missing or deliveries were sent back because the construction sites were not manned. This led to heavy sales losses until June. In the months that followed, when countries like Italy and France, which were massively in lockdown, “came out of the caves”, there was again a constant increase in sales, even if the previous year’s figures were not yet achieved.
Zumtobel is hit particularly hard by the economic decline in Great Britain. The construction industry in this market, which is important for Zumtobel, fell by 18 percent this year, while in Austria it was only a decline of 5 percent by comparison. What was triggered by Brexit and what by Corona is not easy to tell apart.
In any case, Zumtobel is prepared for a hard Brexit with tariffs as well as for a solution with an agreement. Should there be a hard Brexit, production in the north of England will be used for the British market and products that have so far been exported from there to the EU will be produced on the continent if possible.
There is no concrete outlook (guidance) for the current 2020/21 financial year, but the executive board sees the group as “robust enough to get through the current economic crisis well,” it says. The corporate strategy is currently being adapted to the new economic conditions.
In the six months from May to October 2020, sales fell by 14.6 percent to 515.4 million euros. At the same time, the result for the period fell by 46 percent from EUR 24.7 to 13.3 million. The equity ratio as of October 31, 2020 was 28.4 percent.

With the launch of WoW: Shadowlands just around the corner, in this video David Caballero, editor-in-chief of Gamereactor Spain, interviews Patrick Dawson, Production Manager, and Sarah Verrall, Senior Level Designer, about the many new features of the MMORPG eternal. Here is the full transcript of the conversation.
★ Gamereactor: Today we will talk about one of the most important launches of the Christmas campaign for PC that is already around the corner, and I am referring to Shadowlands, obviously, the new Blizzard expansion for World of Warcraft that comes to the market on November 24, after having suffered a slight delay. Many thanks to both Patrick and Sara for being here today; our first question is for you, Patrick: Since you’ve had a little more time due to the delay, what can players expect? Have you been finishing it up or fixing some last minute bugs?
Patrick: Yeah sure, let’s talk about it. You already know that delaying a title is not an easy decision to make, we always like that players can enjoy new content as soon as possible. However, when we tested the final version and after having listened to the opinions of the community we realized that there were a few things that were not exactly as we wanted, and it is very important that we solve this issue, because in the case of the Pacts , for example, these are very important decisions and we want to make sure that the four options are well balanced and that they end up rewarding you and putting you fully into the game so that nobody will think that we have not made an effort to they. We have been working very hard in these Pacts and also in the Maw area so that it is dangerous but also attracts attention so that the players jump to conquer it. We have also been working hard on the new areas for the final version of the title, and I think that when you can enjoy the new stories from November 24, you will have no doubt that the wait will be worth it.
★ You mentioned a couple of things that we also wanted to ask you about, the Pacts and the feedback you have received from the community to date. With Patch 9.0 you completely redesigned the level system of the title, how did players take this change?
Patrick: The level system issue is something that we already had in mind, especially so that new players would not be overwhelmed by seeing that there are 120 levels added to the 16 years that the title has been on the market, so we wanted to give them For these players, a different and new experience, the End of Exile, where you learn the basic mechanics of World of Warcraft and, at the end of it, instead of having to play small pieces of all the expansions, we wanted them to only focus on one, in Battle for Azeroth, in which they will go up to level 50. Also, having fewer levels to play makes them more marked, and so they can also discover more about the classes and how they work in order to be prepared for launch from Shadowlands on the 24th.
★ And what can you tell us about the Pacts? Maybe Sarah can tell us more in depth about how they will work.
Sarah: The Pacts are basically a representation of the four cultures of the Shadowlands, so we have the Kyrian, who are the citizens of Bastion, then the Venthyr of Revendreth, the Pact of Maldraxxus and finally the Pact of Ardenweald. Each of them is part of the plot and you learn more about them as you visit their areas, you also discover what is cooked in these places and who are the members of each of the Pacts, and in the process you are shown the skills that you offer each of the four by choosing one to join. So, finally, you will have to choose which Pact you join, and it is a choice that we want players to think well, since it is something that you are a part of and that identifies your character, and this choice will be based on what that you learn about the area and its culture, the skills that you have been testing, the modifications of pieces of each Pact, also the plots for the maximum level players who want to know more about the Pacts or the individuals with whom you come across by the path that will help you improve your character. There are also very cool events in each of the four elections, for example, if you choose Ardenweald you can work at the Queen’s Conservatory and grow your own plants, they are little things of this style. On the other hand, if you choose the one in Venthyr, you can throw a party and immerse yourself in that gothic and romantic world so typical of vampires and invite other characters from this culture to the party. I think players are going to really enjoy the experience as it is very broad and allows them to make a lot of important decisions that are different from anyone else.
★ It seems something very broad, yes. Since you have talked about the plot and the universe of the saga, let’s talk a little about Sylvanas. Are we at the end of his narrative arc? Who are your allies?
Sarah: Sylvanas is a character that some people like more and others less, she has that gray tone that divides people’s opinions, and everyone is impatient to see what happens to her. What do you expect? Why have you made some decisions and not others? Who are your allies? Finding out what plot in Shadowlands and how their decisions influence the title is an adventure in which we are looking forward to embarking with the players, and the truth is that I am biting my nails to see what the reaction of the community will be when they discover everything.
★ If it turns bad it would be a terrible thing, go. Do you think we can see the Alliance being the bad guys in the story not long from now?
Patrick: Are you sure it gets bad? Or is it that it has been from the beginning? What motivates you or what are your reasons for doing what you do? It’s hard to answer all of this without knowing what’s on your mind, but we’ll find out in Shadowlands. What Sylvanas has done is bring us to this area that, although it is a sinister place that we do not know, also gives us the opportunity to explore it and meet other characters and their stories to discover what it is that it intends and who are the good guys and the bad. But things do not have to be so polarized, maybe there is a space in the middle of both ends, that gray hue that we talk about, and we may see more on this topic throughout history.
★ What kinds of objects will players be able to find while exploring this new world? Will there be new legendary items just like in the other expansions?
Sarah: Yes, of course. One of the most important novelties is Torghast, the new experience that maximum level players can enjoy as many times as they want alone or in a group of five, and, while they are inside the tower, they will find materials that will allow them to make their own own legendary items. This is where the mysterious figure of the Rune Engraver appears, to which if you bring pieces created by the players themselves, such as armor or jewelry, it gives you the option to choose the kind of legendary object you want to make through what it discovers about your shares in Torghast. I think the players will love this, because it will be something very personal to each one, plus they will be able to enjoy Torghast as they explore it from top to bottom and find these materials that will make the experience of each one different from each other. In the end, they will leave the area with items that will improve their gaming experience in raids, in pvp, etc.
★ You mentioned the raids, so I have to ask you about Nathria Castle. What kinds of challenges will players face in it?
Patrick: Nathria Castle is an incursion that, personally, makes me very excited, since I really like the Gothic world, its art and that atmosphere typical of castles, in addition to the fact that the history of the incursion will allow us to discover what Sire Denathrius intends and why we have to fight him and the minions that protect him. There are many more things about the raid that we have been testing in the Public Test Realm, such as destroyed areas or battles that start in one area and end in another, we have tried to add very new things so that players feel that when it comes to raiding These are very varied and different from each other. The truth is that we are hoping that everyone can see it once the season begins.
★ Many thanks to both of you for the interview, we can’t wait to enjoy Shadowlands from November 24th. All good!
Also in table tennis the competitions are stopped. There are attempts to start even with the higher categories, possibly with the dispute of matches by concentration in a venue but for now there is nothing certain.

PARIS / BERLIN, Nov 12 (Reuters) – European authorities on Thursday warned against complacency of COVID-19 and said measures to control a surge in infections as winter approaches should remain in place despite hopes that new vaccines can control the pandemic.
Pfizer Inc’s announcement this week of a potentially effective vaccine raised optimism about an early end to the crisis, causing financial markets to spike sharply and stoking public longing for a near-normal Christmas.
However, France and the World Health Organization (WHO) urged people to continue to comply with lockdowns when it became clear that new vaccines will not arrive soon enough for many COVID-19 sufferers and shrinking economies.
“This is definitely not the time to relax,” French Prime Minister Jean Castex said in an article published in Le Monde newspaper.
While Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech aim to produce 50 million doses this year if the vaccine is approved on time, it won’t be widely available until 2021, forcing strained healthcare systems to continue managing the crisis until then. .
In Italy, which reported 623 deaths on Wednesday and surpassed the million-case milestone, and in Germany, which has also seen infections rise to levels seen earlier in the crisis, authorities said any return to normal will take time. . [nL1N2HX1X0][nL1N2HY10D]
“We have to grit our teeth for a couple more months,” said Lothar Wieler, director of the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases. “Unfortunately, it will take a while for everyone who wants to get vaccinated.”
The dire situation facing Italy, the country at the center of the first wave of the pandemic, was underlined by a video on social media that showed a corpse lying in a hospital bathroom, after the patient apparently died while waiting. a test. [nL1N2HY175]
After achieving some degree of control over the pandemic following widespread lockdowns earlier in the year, governments in the region had to impose new restrictions to try to stem the alarming increase in the number of cases in recent weeks.
However, while signs emerged that such measures may be helping to reduce infection rates in some areas, authorities said more are needed.
“Infections fell rapidly last week, but we need to move further,” Ernst Kuipers, director of the Dutch national hospital association LNAZ, told reporters. “The current measures are still necessary and we continue to emphasize the importance of following the rules.”
European stocks fell from eight-month highs as euphoria over the Pfizer announcement waned, while poor British economic data raised doubts about another brutal slide. [nL8N2HY2QJ]
“Operators are beginning to realize that even if a drug has a very high success rate in the later stages of trials, the process of getting approval and implementation can take a long time,” said David Madden, analyst at CMC Markets UK.

The UK Government raised the alert level for possible terrorist attacks to the fourth degree on a scale of five, following the attack in Vienna, Austria, which left four dead and 22 injured.
The British authorities explained that it is the “severe” level, in the alert it means that an attack is “highly probable” and is only below the “critical” degree, which indicates that an attack is expected “in the near future”.
For her part, the Interior Minister, Priti Patel, said that the decision was made based on the criteria of the Joint Center for Analysis of Terrorism, a body dependent on the intelligence agency MI5.
“This is a precautionary measure and is not based on any specific threat. Citizens must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Police, ”he said.
While the Downing Street spokesman reported that Prime Minister Boris Johnson offered the Austrian Government the collaboration of British experts on terrorism to support the investigations.
The independent Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has changed the UK national terrorism threat level to SEVERE.
This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely.
People should be alert but not alarmed & report concerns to the police.

VIENNA, Nov 3 (Reuters) – Gunmen opened fire at six different locations in central Vienna on Monday night, including the capital’s main synagogue, killing at least five people and seriously wounding several in what Austria called a “repulsive terrorist attack.”
According to several witnesses, the attackers, armed with automatic rifles, fired in bars and restaurants at the crowd, which was taking advantage of the last night before a national curfew was applied due to COVID-19. The police shot down one of the assailants.
The agents also closed a large part of Vienna’s historic center, urging people in the area to take refuge where possible. Many did so in bars and hotels, while public transport in the area interrupted its activity.
“It is the most difficult day for Austria in many years. We are facing a terrorist attack whose severity, thank God, we have not lived in the country in many years, ”Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said at a press conference.
So far the Austrian capital has been spared the kind of deadly attacks that have hit Paris, London, Berlin, and Brussels, among others, in recent years. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the “repulsive” act was “definitely a terrorist attack.”
Oskar Deutsch, a leader of the Vienna Jewish community, which has offices next to the synagogue where one of the attacks occurred, said on Twitter that it was unclear whether the temple or the offices were the target.
Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister, who lives in the area where the synagogue is located, told London’s LBC broadcaster: different bars and pubs ”.
Border controls were tightened, according to the Interior Ministry, and children will not have to go to school on Tuesday. Although people were urged to stay indoors, Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig told ORF broadcaster that the city would function normally on Tuesday, albeit with a greater police presence.
“According to what we currently know, at least one of the assailants is still on the run,” Nehammer said.
“We have assembled several units of special forces that are searching for suspected terrorists,” added the minister, adding that the search was not limited only to Vienna.
Kurz said the army will protect the capital so that the police can focus on counterterrorism operations. “(The attackers) were very well equipped with automatic weapons” and had “prepared professionally,” said the chancellor.
Several videos circulated on social media of an armed man running down a cobbled street while shooting and screaming. In one of the cuts, the assailant opens fire on a person in a bar located near the synagogue. Reuters could not immediately verify the videos.
In 1981, two people were killed and 18 wounded during an attack by two Palestinians on the same Vienna synagogue. In 1985, a Palestinian extremist group killed three civilians in an attack at the airport.
