Kerala aims for 100 percent renewable energy by 2040

Kerala has established a firm target to meet its entire electricity demand through renewable energy sources. This ambitious regional transition plan took center stage during a joint workshop hosted by the Kerala State Electricity Board and the World Resources Institute India. Officials and analysts gathered to evaluate the region's mounting power requirements and to formulate actionable strategies for scaling up renewable energy shares across the local power grid.

The state's growing energy appetite is driven by an expanding fleet of electric vehicles and a heavier reliance on air conditioning as regional temperatures rise. According to reporting from The Economic Times, these domestic demand pressures unfold against a broader background of international market volatility and strained supply chains.

Global energy networks face acute challenges from ongoing geopolitical conflicts and maritime disruptions. The ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran has affected vital maritime chokepoints, specifically the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where shipping traffic has decreased significantly following strategic movements in the region. Although Gulf producers have adapted by utilizing alternative pipeline routes and increasing exports to stabilize oil prices, these workarounds remain costly and unsustainable over the long term.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that India has largely insulated itself from crude oil and natural gas supply disruptions stemming from the West Asia crisis. This resilience was achieved by diversifying crude oil sourcing to multiple countries and strengthening domestic liquefied petroleum gas production, though logistics continue to present ongoing challenges. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the United Nations General Assembly regarding global conflicts, warning that nations far from the fighting are severely affected by disruptions in energy and food markets.

During an official visit to the Czech Republic, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed regional energy challenges during joint press statements with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. Meloni noted that the Italian government appealed to major economic actors to support families and businesses through difficult economic conditions, expressing gratitude for fuel supply initiatives supported by entities in Azerbaijan and Kuwait. Both Italy and the Czech Republic remain committed to diversifying their energy supply sources and exploring technological partnerships, including new-generation nuclear power.
