British woman arrested in Thailand over boyfriend’s fatal stabbing
Isabel Violet Carreras remains in custody following the death of Thomas David Powell, who was found with multiple stab wounds at a rental property. Police are investigating the circumstances of the death after expressing doubts regarding the suspect's version of events.
A 21-year-old British woman remains in custody in Thailand following the death of her partner, a 34-year-old British cannabis farm operator. The incident, which has drawn significant attention from local authorities, occurred in the Nong Prue area of Chon Buri, near the beachside city of Pattaya.
According to investigators from the Nong Prue police station, the victim, Thomas David Powell, was found inside a bathroom attached to a bedroom at a luxury rental property. Medical assessments conducted by authorities indicate that the death occurred at least six hours prior to the arrival of law enforcement officers. Police reports describe the victim as having sustained multiple stab wounds, including injuries to his torso, back, and left hand.

The suspect, identified as Isabel Violet Carreras, was located at the scene by officers. During the initial police response, authorities recovered a 50-centimetre machete-style knife, which had been found inside a sink and appeared to have been washed clean. Police Colonel Nattapon Phongsuksakul stated that investigators have encountered difficulties accepting the suspect’s version of events. While Carreras reportedly claimed that Powell had caused his own injuries, police noted that the nature of the wounds, particularly those on the back, contradicted her testimony.
Evidence gathered by the police suggests a violent struggle occurred within the residence. Officers reported discovering bloodstains on furniture and throughout various areas of the property. Further analysis indicated that the body may have been manipulated following the attack, noting that a pillow had been positioned beneath the victim’s head within the bathroom. Additionally, responding officers identified cuts on the suspect’s fingertips.
The alarm was raised when a friend of the victim entered the property to conduct a welfare check. This individual had been contacted by a business associate of Powell based in the United States, who had grown concerned after being unable to reach him. Upon entering the home, the friend recorded video footage of the scene before alerting the police.
Neighbours told investigators that the couple had moved into the rental home approximately two weeks prior to the incident and were known to be frequent users of cannabis. Police reported that the pair had been together for about two years and had expressed intentions to settle in Thailand. Carreras reportedly informed investigators that the couple had spent time looking at engagement rings earlier that day before returning home to smoke cannabis together. She claimed to have no recollection of the events that transpired afterwards. At the time of her apprehension, officers noted that she appeared to be under the influence of the substance.
The broader context of the incident coincides with ongoing shifts in Thai legislation. While Thailand became the first country in Asia to legalise cannabis in 2022, leading to a proliferation of shops, authorities are now considering new restrictions that would limit usage to individuals possessing a valid medical certificate.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office addressed the situation, stating:
"We are supporting the families of two British nationals in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities."
