Darline Graham Nordone appointed to serve remainder of Lindsey Graham’s term
Darline Graham Nordone is set to serve as South Carolina's first female U.S. Senator following the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham. She will hold the seat until the term concludes in January following a special election.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced on Monday, 13 July 2026, the appointment of Darline Graham Nordone to serve the remainder of the U.S. Senate term previously held by her brother, Lindsey Graham. The appointment was formalised during a press conference at the statehouse in Columbia, where the governor named Nordone to fill the vacancy created by the senator’s unexpected death on Saturday.
Senator Graham, 71, died due to an aortic dissection, a tear in the inner wall of the aorta related to the hardening of his arteries, according to preliminary medical examiner findings. The late senator, who never married and had no children, served as legal guardian to Nordone after their parents died when they were young. Nordone, who has worked as an optician and for state agencies including the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and the Department of Employment and Workforce, accepted the appointment following consultations between the governor and the White House.

President Donald Trump publicly recommended the appointment of Nordone prior to the governor’s announcement. In a post on Truth Social, the president expressed his support for the selection, noting the bond between the late senator and his sister. During the statehouse briefing, Governor McMaster described the appointment as both a duty and an honour, stating he had spoken with Nordone in the early hours of Sunday morning following the senator's passing.
Nordone addressed the press alongside the governor and Senator Tim Scott, expressing grief while committing to the temporary role.
"I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted, and I plan to honor him in this way."

The appointment serves as a temporary measure until the end of the term in early January. Under South Carolina law, a filing period for a special primary election to select a permanent nominee begins on 21 July 2026. The special primary is scheduled for 11 August 2026, with a potential runoff on 25 August 2026. The accelerated timeline faces potential logistical challenges regarding federal requirements for the distribution of military and overseas ballots.
The field of potential candidates for the seat remains in flux. Former governor Mark Sanford indicated in an interview that he has received numerous inquiries regarding a potential run and stated he would consider the prospect. Businessman Mark Lynch, who competed against Graham in the recent primary, has confirmed through a spokesperson that he intends to enter the race. Other potential contenders mentioned in political circles include Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, though no official filings have been confirmed.
In Washington, Senate proceedings continue to reflect the loss of the veteran lawmaker. A black drape remains over the late senator’s desk on the Senate floor, adorned with white roses. Chaplain Barry Black dedicated the opening prayer to the late senator’s family and staff. Meanwhile, law enforcement activity remains ongoing at the late senator's residence; federal agents continue to investigate the circumstances of his death as a standard precaution, with no evidence of foul play reported.
The interim appointment of Nordone, who is expected to be sworn in this week, marks the first Time a woman has represented South Carolina in the Senate.
