President Donald Trump shared a provocative post about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ahead of a NATO summit in Ankara. The incident follows disputes over military operations, policy disagreements, and personal public exchanges.

President Donald Trump escalated his public dispute with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday by sharing a digital image of the pair on his Truth Social platform. The post, which featured the caption “RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED,” showed the Italian leader gazing toward the President. The message arrived as both figures prepared to travel to Ankara for a NATO summit scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The post serves as the latest development in a deteriorating relationship between two leaders once aligned as right-wing populist allies. Friction intensified last month following the G7 summit in France, where Trump publicly claimed that Meloni had requested a photograph with him repeatedly. In an interview with NBC News, Trump stated:

"She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her."

Meloni rejected the account, describing the allegations as “completely made up.” In a video statement, she insisted that “neither I nor Italy ever beg,” and addressed the President directly to state that the attacks were “senseless.” She further remarked that her domestic popularity relied on her commitment to Italy’s national interest, advising the President to focus on his own affairs. The Prime Minister’s office has declined to provide further comment on the social media activity.

The discord extends beyond personal grievances to include fundamental policy disagreements, particularly regarding U.S. Military operations against Iran. Trump has accused Italy of restricting U.S. Access to runways for these operations. While NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte attempted to mitigate these concerns in a Fox News interview by claiming that more than 500 sorties had been supported from U.S. Bases in Italy, the Italian government disputed this characterization. Officials in Rome maintained that the flights were merely routine logistical support conducted under established bilateral treaties, asserting that such agreements cannot be violated while Meloni remains in office.

The conflict has been exacerbated by earlier tensions regarding the Vatican. When Trump criticized the Pope for opposing the conflict in Iran, Meloni intervened to label the remarks “unacceptable,” defending the Pope’s right to call for peace. Trump subsequently expressed shock at her stance, suggesting he had been mistaken in his assessment of her courage.

Within Italy, the political response to Trump’s behavior has been mixed. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto addressed the latest social media post during a television interview on Monday, stating he had “no reaction” and that his priority remained the maintenance of stable relations with a key ally. He emphasized that the bond between nations should not be dependent on individual personalities. However, opposition politician Carlo Calenda took a harsher stance, characterizing the President as a “despicable two-bit bully” and offering solidarity to the Prime Minister.

Analysts suggest these public exchanges reflect a broader pattern of volatility in U.S. Foreign policy. Alessandro Marrone, head of the defence and security programme at Rome’s Institute for International Affairs, noted that the situation illustrates how personal perceptions and feelings increasingly shape U.S. Decision-making. Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta has attempted to frame the discord as a manageable “disagreement among friends,” maintaining that the overall relationship remains excellent.

Looking ahead, the upcoming summit in Ankara is expected to include a high-profile gathering of international leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. The meeting occurs as Italy faces internal pressure regarding its defence spending. While Meloni’s government has resisted utilizing €14.9 billion in low-cost EU loans for security purposes, citing the political controversy of borrowing during an election year, officials like Crosetto continue to warn that the shifting international landscape necessitates increased investment.
