Bentley unveils its first electric car with Torcal SUV

Bentley has officially unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, introducing the Torcal luxury SUV during a global debut on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. The launch marks a foundational shift for the historic British carmaker, which has anchored its identity to internal-combustion engines for more than a century. Built to appeal to wealthy buyers seeking zero-emission motoring without abandoning traditional design language, the Torcal arrives at a time when the broader UK motor industry faces severe economic headwinds and shifting consumer demand for electric vehicles.

The Torcal enters a specialized segment for luxury electric vehicles. While ultra-luxury rivals like Ferrari introduced the electric Luce and Rolls-Royce offers the Spectre, Bentley has positioned the Torcal closer to the lower boundary of its vehicle range. According to reporting from the New York Post, the vehicle carries a starting price of £173,000, or approximately $230,000, which chief executive Frank-Steffen Walliser described as a more accessible entry point designed to open new markets.

The vehicle is underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric architecture, sharing core hardware with the Porsche Cayenne Electric, as reported by GTspirit. This includes an 800-volt electrical system and a 113 kWh battery pack comprising 192 pouch cells. Despite these shared foundations under the corporate umbrella, Bentley engaged in extensive bespoke tuning to ensure the vehicle retains its signature driving dynamics.

Chassis engineering represents a major technological leap for the brand. As detailed by Electrek, the Torcal is the first Bentley equipped with fully active suspension. Individual two-valve dampers raise or lower each corner independently to manage body roll on demand, completely eliminating the need for conventional anti-roll bars. Standard all-wheel steering turns the rear wheels by up to five degrees, shrinking the turning circle of the five-metre SUV to 11.1 metres.

To preserve the acoustic character associated with the marque, Bentley abandoned traditional synthetic exhaust noises in favor of a bespoke aural signature. According to The Guardian, the car uses a digital soundtrack created from live recordings of musicians playing drums, viola, and bass guitar, modeled on the rhythm of the company's traditional V8 engines. The cabin also features sustainable materials, including the automotive industry's first certified 100 percent Merino wool fabric developed alongside Fox Brothers, and Ombré Walnut veneer created from pressed wood off-cuts and recycled craft paper.

The multi-million-pound investment revitalizing Bentley's headquarters has direct local implications. British business minister Jonathan Reynolds stated that the funding supports 4,000 high-value local jobs in Crewe, according to the BBC. Reynolds characterized the announcement as part of a broader wave of confidence in Britain's automotive manufacturing sector following major commitments from rival carmakers.
