John Legend to Play Harry Belafonte in Bill Condon’s ‘The Road Home’

Production is officially underway in South Africa and the UK on The Road Home, an ambitious music-driven drama directed by Bill Condon. According to reporting from Screen Daily, EGOT-winning musician John Legend has signed on to star as the late civil rights icon, singer, and actor Harry Belafonte. The project explores the political and moral firestorm that erupted in the mid-1980s following the creation of Paul Simon’s classic album, Graceland.

The narrative unfolds primarily through the perspective of exiled South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, portrayed by Thabo Rametsi. Masekela finds himself torn between his mentor, archbishop Trevor Huddleston (played by Guy Pearce), who declares a strict boycott against Simon, and his own belief that the music can serve the liberation struggle. Alongside fellow exile and powerhouse vocalist Miriam “Mama Africa” Makeba (played by Cynthia Erivo), Masekela breaks with Huddleston to join Simon — played by Johnny Flynn — forming the famed Graceland band to take South African music to a global audience.

Harry Belafonte held a foundational role in the real-life events and among several key figures depicted in the film. As a pillar of the American anti-apartheid movement, Belafonte served as a patron to the South African leads. He helped finance Masekela's music studies during exile and launched Makeba's international career, eventually sharing a Grammy with her. When Paul Simon sought his counsel before traveling to record in apartheid South Africa, Belafonte famously urged him to first secure the blessing of the movement, advice that Simon ultimately bypassed.

The project originally took shape through the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, which approached writer Michael Bronner to develop the story. Bronner’s research included extensive interviews with Paul Simon. The film boasts full access to the vital music at the heart of its plot, with veteran producer Hilton Rosenthal securing rights to the catalogs of Simon, Masekela, and Makeba. Rosenthal is co-producing the film and will produce brand-new recordings of their songs for the official soundtrack.

Director Bill Condon works from a screenplay by Bronner, based on a story crafted by Bronner alongside celebrated South African novelist Zakes Mda. Additional casting updates from Screen Daily note that Kathryn Hunter and Kate Dickie have also joined the ensemble cast.

Financing and distribution details reflect a broad international footprint. Studiocanal is financing the film alongside Flora Films and Rob Bath, and will handle distribution directly across nine territories, including the UK, France, Germany, and South Africa. Palisades Park Pictures is managing remaining international sales, while a U.S. Distribution deal remains to be finalised.
