Scottie Scheffler misses cut at Scottish Open to end 78-event streak
Scottie Scheffler's streak of 78 consecutive made cuts ended at the Genesis Scottish Open after he finished at level par. He now prepares to defend his title at The 154th Open.
Scottie Scheffler’s streak of 78 consecutive made cuts on the PGA Tour came to a definitive end on Friday, 10 July 2026, at the Genesis Scottish Open. The world number one, who had not missed a weekend since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, failed to advance at The Renaissance Club after signing for a 2-over 72 in his second round.
Having opened the tournament with a 2-under 68, the American entered the second day three shots off the lead. However, his momentum stalled early on Friday. Scheffler, who began his day on the back nine, struggled to find consistency, recording three bogeys and one birdie to turn in 37. Although he showed brief signs of recovery with a birdie at the first hole, he was unable to capitalize further, carding seven consecutive pars before dropping another shot at the ninth. He ultimately finished at level par for the tournament, falling short of the projected cut line.

Reflecting on the performance, Scheffler noted that his inability to set up scoring chances ultimately cost him.
"I got off to a tough start and back nine, just felt like I wasn't hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities. I think that's really kind of what it comes down to."
He further acknowledged that the result was not the ideal preparation for his upcoming schedule: I'll figure out how to get down from Birkdale and go from there.
This departure marks a rare stumble for the 30-year-old, who has dominated the men’s game with 16 event wins—including three majors—during the four-year span of his streak. While he remains a central figure in sport, the end of this run leaves the record held by Tiger Woods, who made 142 consecutive cuts between 1998 and 2005, safely intact. Other players have also seen notable streaks conclude this year; Xander Schauffele’s run of 72 consecutive cuts ended earlier in the 2026 season at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Performance reports from the event highlighted that Scheffler’s play was below average in both approach play and putting, compounded by a failure to find enough fairways to generate birdie opportunities. His frustration was visible throughout the round, particularly after an errant tee shot at the 17th landed in a pot bunker, leading him to remark on his own play as he walked off the tee box.
The timing of this early exit forces a shift in plans for the defending Champion Golfer of the Year. Scheffler now heads south to Royal Birkdale earlier than anticipated. He will attempt to defend his title at The 154th Open, which is scheduled to take place from July 16–19. Achieving a repeat victory would place him in rare company, as the last player to successfully defend the title was Padraig Harrington in 2009.
Following his exit, Scheffler stated he intends to reflect on his performance at the end of the year to assess whether any adjustments to his tournament planning are required for future seasons, noting that he has sometimes found it difficult to adapt to the specific style and grasses of The Renaissance Club.
