Texas faces severe flood alerts as hurricane remnants bring heavy rain across the state, threatening local communities with torrential downpours and rising waters.

While the east coast of Texas has remained largely dry amid a quiet hurricane season, stretches of West and Central Texas are bracing for torrential rain as the remnants of Hurricane Polo sweep across the state, according to reporting from Chron. Stretches of West and Central Texas could see torrential rain beginning Wednesday and continuing into Thursday morning, as reported by Matt Lanza of The Eyewall. Up to 10 inches of rain could fall in parts of Southwest Texas between San Antonio and Del Rio, raising the threat of serious flash flooding.

The flood threat is expected to spread east and north as the storm system moves across the state. Areas north and west of Fort Worth could see flooding Wednesday, while substantial rain could reach Waco and Austin from Thursday night into Friday. The National Weather Service placed much of South Central Texas under a Flood Watch from Wednesday evening through Friday evening, warning that heavy rain could produce life-threatening flash flooding in parts of the region. Austin, San Antonio, and Waco are among the communities facing an elevated flood threat, while Houston and Victoria face a lower risk, though heavy rain could still affect parts of Southeast Texas.

The latest threat comes just days after the remnants of Hurricane Polo brought significant rain to parts of the Southwest. West Texas saw rain around Lubbock, Odessa, and El Paso, while nearly 5 inches fell in parts of New Mexico and Arizona. Polo caused its most significant impacts in Mexico's Baja California Sur over the weekend before weakening as it moved northwest toward New Mexico, Arizona, and West Texas. Now, the remnants of Polo are helping fuel another wet setup as they interact with a slow-moving system and moisture across Texas, with widespread flash flooding already occurring in the Southwest expected to expand into West and Central Texas through Thursday and Friday. Texas was largely spared from Hurricane Polo's path, continuing a trend in the Lone Star State, where just two named storms — Tropical Storm Arthur in June and Tropical Storm Bertha — hit Texas as significant weather events, and no named hurricane made direct landfall.

Meanwhile, extreme weather warnings extend far beyond North America. In Europe, Spain's state meteorological agency, AEMET, issued amber alerts across popular holiday destinations including the Balearic Islands and Barcelona, warning of significant danger from torrential rain, strong winds, and coastal waves, as detailed by the Manchester Evening News. All of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, were hit with alerts as heavy rain, storms, and large waves were expected. AEMET warned that 100mm of rainfall could accumulate within just three or four hours, alongside storm wind gusts of up to 90kmh and possible hail. Similar amber warnings for rain and storms were put in place across Barcelona, where AEMET warned that accumulated rainfall in one hour could reach 60mm with torrential intensity.

As the weather system progresses across Texas, local emergency management teams continue to monitor rainfall totals and river levels. Residents in affected flood zones are advised to stay tuned to local broadcasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the heavy moisture moves east and north across the state.
