Authorities in eastern China have initiated a massive evacuation effort as Typhoon Bavi tracks toward the mainland, with government figures confirming that more than 900,000 residents have been displaced as of Saturday, 11 July 2026. The mobilization is focused heavily on Wenzhou, a major city in Zhejiang province, where 887,801 individuals were evacuated by late Friday. Local officials described the effort as a proactive measure intended to guard against a worst-case scenario. Residents in the path of the storm have been observed reinforcing shops with wood and taping windows in anticipation of exceptionally heavy rains, which are also expected to impact northeastern Fujian province.

Further north, the government confirmed an additional 100,000 evacuations. These actions are coupled with increased water discharge rates from the Miyun Reservoir to create necessary capacity for incoming floodwaters. This weather emergency follows a week of severe conditions in southern and central China, where existing storms have resulted in at least 39 deaths, the overflowing of dozens of rivers, and the failure of at least one reservoir dam. Meteorological data from the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service indicates that ocean temperatures during June reached record highs, a factor cited as contributing to the intensity and moisture levels of the current storm system, which is also influenced by the return of the El Niño phenomenon.

Typhoon Bavi, which weakened to typhoon status after striking Guam and the Northern Marianas as a super typhoon, previously passed near northern Taiwan and Japan’s remote southwestern islands. In northern Taiwan, businesses were shuttered for two days, and more than 14,000 people were evacuated. The storm resulted in power outages for more than 170,000 households across the island, with hundreds of flights cancelled. Reports from the Philippines indicate that heavy rains associated with the system caused landslides and other incidents resulting in 18 deaths, mostly on the island of Mindanao, with nearly 11,000 people displaced and dozens of ports closed. In Japan, the Miyako region reported significant infrastructure damage, with more than 18,000 households losing power and airlines cancelling dozens of flights.

Venezuela Earthquake Recovery

While Asia faces the typhoon, the world is also monitoring the aftermath of the 24 June twin earthquakes in Venezuela. On Friday, 10 July 2026, the government confirmed that the death toll has reached 4,118, with 16,740 people injured. The disaster, involving back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors, flattened entire districts in the coastal state of La Guaira. High-rise apartment buildings were reduced to rubble during the events, which the government noted were the strongest to hit the nation in over a century. A 3.0 magnitude tremor occurred in Caracas on Friday, prompting momentary panic and the evacuation of buildings.

The humanitarian situation remains critical as the United Nations works to address the needs of 1.3 million people, having issued an appeal for nearly $300 million to fund relief operations. Physical damage to infrastructure and housing is estimated at $37 billion by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. Although official rescue teams have halted their searches for survivors, family members continue to navigate the ruins in hopes of recovering loved ones.

The recovery process is complicated by Venezuela’s ongoing economic crisis and international sanctions. Interim president Delcy Rodríguez has formally requested that King Charles III release 30 tons of gold currently held under UK sanctions to assist with reconstruction efforts. While U.S. Urban search and rescue teams previously completed their mission in the country, having saved six lives, international aid coordination continues. John Barrett, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Caracas, confirmed that the U.S. Remains involved in the ongoing effort to provide food, water, medical care, and shelter to affected communities.
