Poland warns Russia is planning hybrid drone and rocket strikes on NATO territory

Poland has issued a stark warning that Russia is actively preparing hybrid attacks involving drones and rockets targeting European nations that support Ukraine, according to reporting from The Globe and Mail and Ottumwa Courier.

Speaking to the Polish parliament, Prime Minister Donald Tusk cautioned that Moscow intends to frame incoming munitions as accidental occurrences. The strategy aims to paralyze or weaken the motivation of NATO member states to rush to the defense of targeted allies. Tusk based his assessment on intelligence gathered from NATO, Ukrainian, and U.S. Secret services, including the CIA.

According to The Guardian and inkl, a spokesperson for the Polish military told TVN24 that air defenses activated after a jet-powered drone approached Polish airspace before exploding four kilometres from the border. A petrol station near the border was struck by a drone, and authorities temporarily suspended operations at Poland's Lublin and Rzeszow airports. Tusk noted that Russia increasingly relies on jet-powered drones, which fly higher and faster, complicating air defense detection.

Russian missiles and drones injured at least nineteen people in Kyiv and the surrounding region, where Kyiv's military administration reported more than ten locations hit and thirty-three sites damaged. Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia noted that roughly three thousand grain wagons bound for Danube ports now face lengthy detours.

Ukraine retaliated with deep strikes inside Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in Yaroslavl and a military airfield in the Rostov region. The Yaroslavl operation involved joint efforts by the country's Security Service, special operations forces, military intelligence, and foreign intelligence. Industry sources told Reuters that the refinery halted crude processing following the attack, while the local Russian governor confirmed damage at the Rostov airfield, which affected military aircraft.

Tusk asserted that Russia is not ready for peace talks without Ukraine's total capitulation, expressing conviction that Moscow expects a critically harsh winter. Last winter, Poland stepped in with energy infrastructure deliveries, but Tusk warned that ongoing Russian targeting of border crossings threatens to disrupt logistics entirely.

In response to the mounting crisis, Tusk announced an overnight journey to Kyiv in an act of defiance, following a recent incident where European leaders narrowly escaped a drone strike on a train near the border. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also planned a visit to Kyiv, claiming Europe is closer than ever to a large-scale war. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union will disburse €3.3bn to Ukraine on Friday to acquire missiles and drones.

Political realignments continue alongside the fighting. U.S. President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social that major progress is underway toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland following a recent delegation visit to review potential sites. Poland has long sought a permanent U.S. Military presence as a security guarantee against the escalating Russian threat.

What happens next depends heavily on immediate diplomatic and military maneuvers. Tusk and Zelenskyy are scheduled to hold talks in Kyiv concerning countermeasures against advanced drones, while European partners coordinate further sanctions against Moscow.
