The summit took place as hostilities escalated with Iran, which borders Turkey. Business Times reported that Trump had taken the newly renovated Qatari-donated jet to Ankara for the summit before the unexpected switch.

The deception left the presidential aircraft carrying journalists and top aides, who remained at apparent risk of an Iranian strike and did not know the president had left, when Trump exited the presidential plane. Some media commentators questioned whether the operation left Trump’s aides and journalists travelling with him at risk aboard the plane presumed to be carrying the president.
Political Fallout and Congressional Demands
The revelation has sparked immediate demands for accountability from Capitol Hill. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer harshly criticized the administration's handling of the security threat and the subsequent lack of transparency.

Schumer further accused the administration of courting unnecessary danger. In a blistering statement, he asserted that Trump has put America's sons and daughters in harm's way by getting into an unnecessary and reckless war,
while slamming the administration for repeatedly refusing to provide Congress and the public with the transparency they deserve.
The top Senate Democrat also stated that Republicans were prioritizing luxury and vanity over security, and insisted that Congress must reassert its constitutional authority and bring this [Iran] conflict to an end.
Schumer has demanded that the White House immediately brief Congress on details of the mission and how it was executed.
