The medium of cinema, now a cornerstone of global visual art, traces its origins to a series of mechanical curiosities developed in the 19th century. The early history of film was defined by rudimentary devices designed to exploit the human eye’s tendency to perceive rapid successions of images as continuous motion. This phenomenon, known as flicker fusion, allowed inventors to simulate movement long before the camera could capture it in real-time.
The film medium finds its technical roots in the stroboscopic animation principles introduced in 1833 with the stroboscopic disc, commonly known as the phénakisticope. By the mid-to-late 19th century, this foundation led to the development of the zoetrope, the flip book, and the praxinoscope. This transition was rapid; by 1931, the silent film had largely vanished from the American industry.
