New data shows that 64.1 per cent of South Western Railway services arrived on time between April and December last year. The operator reports that it is working to address reliability issues inherited from the previous private sector operator.

South Western Railway (SWR) has recorded its lowest punctuality levels since 2019, according to data covering the period following the operator's move into state control. The firm was the first of Britain’s 19 privatised rail operators to be taken under full state control on May 25 last year.

Office of Rail and Road figures show that during April-December last year 64.1 per cent of SWR’s services arrived on time, defined as within one minute of their scheduled arrival. This is the lowest on record since 2019’s April-December punctuality figure of 59.8 per cent. Similarly, cancellations during the same period of state control increased by 6.5 per cent, equating to a total of 17,218 services not running – an increase of 1,000 cancellations on the year before nationalisation.

Jeremy Varns, a spokesman for the SWR Watch passenger pressure group, said: “The state-run model is completely failing to manage rolling stock and day-to-day operations, while the Treasury quietly starves the system of the cash needed to turn it around. This data proves that the disruption passengers are seeing at Waterloo and across the network isn’t a string of bad luck; it is structural decline.” Lord Hendy, the rail minister, said: “One year on from the first train operations entering public ownership, passengers are seeing and feeling the difference. Modern trains, more seats and greater capacity are restoring confidence in the railway and showing what can be achieved when we put passengers first rather than profit.”

Commenting on falling punctuality and increasing cancellations, an SWR-Network Rail Wessex spokesman said: “The reliability of our services is not where we want it to be and has been undermined by a series of specific challenges in the past year. These have mainly been the result of issues we inherited from the previous private sector operator. “It will take time to unpick this, but we have a clear plan in place to upgrade our infrastructure, recruit more drivers and refresh our timetable, which, together with our new fleet of trains, will deliver a more reliable and resilient railway for our customers.” So far, 50 of the new Arterio trains have been delivered, against an eventual target of 90 in service by next year.

Labour came to power in 2024 promising to nationalise all private train companies into a new state-run entity called Great British Railways (GBR). GBR-liveried trains are now starting to run around the rail network, including on the SWR network, where one set of rolling stock in Great Britain colours was unveiled on Thursday. The formal creation of GBR and merging of companies such as SWR into the new state rail operator will be preceded by a significant change to timetables in late 2027 or early 2028, before the next general election, which is expected to take place in 2029.
