Authorities in Thailand are investigating the deadliest blaze in Bangkok in 17 years, following a nighttime inferno at a music bar that claimed at least 27 lives. The fire occurred at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao venue in the city's Chatuchak district, erupting shortly before midnight on Sunday, 12 July 2026. While the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported 27 deaths, other emergency sources noted the toll reached 28 by the evening of Monday, 13 July 2026.

Most of the fatalities were discovered in windowless bathrooms at the rear of the building. City officials confirmed that the majority of deaths resulted from smoke inhalation. According to National Police Chief Kittharath Punpetch, many victims appeared to have sought shelter in these restrooms after finding the main hall filled with thick, blinding smoke.

Disaster Timeline and Immediate Response

  • Sunday, 12 July: Fire breaks out shortly before midnight at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar.
  • Early Monday, 13 July: Firefighters bring the blaze under control after approximately 30 minutes of effort.
  • Monday, 13 July (Daybreak): Forensic teams begin cordoning off the site and examining the wreckage.
  • Monday, 13 July (Afternoon): Families gather at the Institute of Forensic Medicine to assist with victim identification.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that among those killed were 18 women and 9 men. Across the city, 73 people were reported injured, with at least 22 to 25 individuals remaining in critical condition across various hospitals.

Eyewitnesses, including a musician performing at the time, reported seeing smoke emerging from a circuit breaker near the stage. This was followed by a power failure and an explosion, causing thick, blinding smoke to fill the venue rapidly. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, noted that the rapid escalation made evacuation extremely difficult.

Safety and Structural Concerns

Investigators are currently focusing on the ceiling above the stage, where they suspect flammable decorative materials may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze. National Police Chief Kittharath Punpetch stated that the bar, which has a capacity for up to 600 customers, possessed four exits, yet many remained inaccessible. One rear exit may have been obstructed by a table used for selling candy, while another near the kitchen was narrowed by lockers and shelving units. Furthermore, signs suggested that some exit doors may have been locked.

"From what I heard from people who were inside when the fire started, everything went dark. The power was out, and there was smoke everywhere, so they couldn't locate other people."

The venue was severely damaged, with street-facing windows blown out and interior debris consisting of charred electronics and musical instruments. The bar's management issued a statement via social media expressing condolences and confirming they are cooperating with the inquiry. The owner of the venue remains in intensive care following the incident.

This tragedy draws comparisons to previous fatal fires in Thailand, including the 2009 Santika nightclub fire, which resulted in 67 deaths, and a 2022 bar fire in the eastern region that killed 14 people. Families of the victims have been requested to provide DNA samples to assist the Institute of Forensic Medicine with identification, as many patrons were not carrying identification at the time of the fire. Authorities are now inspecting the establishment’s operating license and compliance with safety standards, including the visibility of exit signs and the configuration of evacuation routes.
