Trump dismisses concerns and says USS Lincoln deployment not long enough

President Donald Trump downplayed concerns regarding the welfare of American sailors on Friday, asserting that the record-setting deployment ofपीय the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East was not nearly long enough. Speaking to reporters before flying to New York for an event highlighting falling violent crime rates, Trump dismissed suggestions that military families were worried about the lengthy mission, stating, No, they're not. He also confirmed that a relief effort is underway, noting that another very similar ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it's being replaced with another very similar ship.

The USS Abraham Lincoln left its home port in San Diego in November and was rerouted to the Middle East in January in the lead-up to the war with Iran. The vessel has spent more than 240 days of uninterrupted time at sea, with overall deployment exceeding 260 days. The conflict itself has now been more than five months old. The carrier's extended presence in a conflict zone has made it a challenge to keep the ship fully supplied and operating smoothly.

Numerous relatives of the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier have voiced outrage at reports of food shortages, water contamination, moldy showers and long shifts in wartime aboard the vessel. First reports about inadequate supplies on the ship began to surface in April, when USA Today shared a photo of a paltry meal purportedly served to the crew that included a small pile of carrots, a bunless hamburger patty and an unidentified slice of meat. Family members told USA Today that disruptions in mail service prevented them from sending their loved ones supplies that might help them ride out the extended deployment. The Navy responded to that report with a statement saying the Lincoln and another aircraft carrier in the region have sufficient food onboard to serve their crews with healthy options.

Families of crew members have repeatedly spoken out about the mental health toll that the prolonged deployment has had on those aboard the Lincoln. A Navy official said a sailor aboard the Lincoln went overboard in early August but the person was quickly recovered, treated by the ship’s medical department and transferred off ship for follow-on care.

Defense officials have pushed back on reports about the issues on the Lincoln. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described reports about the USS Lincoln as completely misrepresented, in an interview with Newsmax on Thursday. US Central Command on Thursday said on social media that there had been several false claims about the aircraft carrier and that the Sailors and Marines of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group remain resilient and resolved after more than 260 days at sea, 10,000 aircraft fights. After reports emerged that sailors on the Lincoln are struggling with mental health concerns, the Navy said it has not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship, though officials have declined to provide data, citing operational security and patient privacy concerns.

Several Democratic lawmakers, including Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Ruben Gallego of Arizona, are pressing for accountability from the Pentagon over conditions aboard the Lincoln. Top Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have requested a classified briefing on the ship’s food inventory, sanitation issues and healthcare availability, as well as an assessment of how much longer it would be deployed before relief arrives. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly during a Fox News appearance on Friday insisted this president cares about our United States military service members, our troops, more than everybody, despite his earlier comments.

Trump acknowledged on Friday, during his crime address in Garden City, New York, that he’s used the U.S. Military a little bit more than I wanted to, while asserting anew that the U.S. Operation against Iran is going well. I’ll never apologize, Trump added about the war and its impact on oil prices. I did the right thing. The acting navy secretary, Hung Cao, said the Lincoln will return home soon in a social media post on Friday. Another aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington, left port in Da Nang, Vietnam, last week, and is expected to replace the USS Lincoln, one of two aircraft carriers currently deployed in the Middle East.
