Ukraine drones 'kill eight,' hit Wildberries warehouse

Ukrainian drone strikes have killed at least eight people across multiple Russian regions, striking a major online retail warehouse and hitting economic infrastructure far from the front lines, according to regional officials. The cross-border escalation marks a widening offensive on Russian economic and energy targets as Ukrainian forces attempt to undermine Moscow's war effort, which has now lasted more than four years.

According to reporting by Reuters published via AOL, Russia's Defence Ministry stated that air defences intercepted and downed 635 Ukrainian drones during the night.

In the border region of Belgorod, acting governor Alexander Shuvayev reported that a Ukrainian drone struck an area directly next to a children's playground. The blast killed one child and injured two others. Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's commissioner for children's rights, condemned the incident as another inhumane terrorist act by Ukraine, as cited by Russian news agencies. Local task force reports further noted that separate Ukrainian strikes in Belgorod left three people dead and five injured.

Further inland, Ukrainian drones targeted a massive warehouse belonging to Wildberries—frequently described as Russia's version of Amazon—located in the Samara region. Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev noted that the site sits approximately 800 kilometres from Ukraine's most advanced military positions. While a fire broke out as a result of the strike, Fedorishchev confirmed there were no casualties at the facility. According to regional assessments, Ukrainian forces have launched attacks against roughly a dozen Wildberries sites in an ongoing campaign to disrupt the consumer retail giant's operations.

The assault also hit residential areas and strategic energy installations. In the neighbouring Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin stated that a strike on a residential building in the city of Engels killed two people and damaged civil infrastructure in both Engels and Saratov city. Both locations have faced repeated attacks in recent years, with Saratov hosting a major oil refinery and Engels housing a military air base. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the operations, explicitly naming the Saratov oil refinery and the Engels military air base, while thanking Ukrainian armed forces for returning the war to its origin.

Additional casualties were reported in the Udmurtia region, where acting governor Olga Abramova confirmed that three people were killed and two others injured in a drone attack. Meanwhile, the governor of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov, reported that air defence units successfully repelled a massive drone assault on industrial facilities, shooting down one drone over the industrial zone of the regional capital, Ufa, where emergency crews worked to extinguish a resulting fire. Ukraine's military also claimed responsibility for striking an oil depot in the western Kaluga region.

In parallel, Russian forces retaliated with strikes inside Ukraine. Russia's Defence Ministry announced that its forces hit infrastructure and two vessels carrying military cargo in the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv, alongside another vessel carrying military supplies in the Black Sea. In the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, regional governor Ivan Fedorov reported that Russian-launched glide bombs killed one person and injured 21 others.
