White House Blocks CNN From Air Force One Flight After Credentials Restored

The White House has blocked CNN from flying aboard Air Force One for a scheduled trip to Tennessee, according to multiple media reports, just a day after a federal judge ordered the administration to restore press credentials to several major news organizations. The decision prevents the network from carrying out its duties covering the president on behalf of the other major networks during the journey to a college football game.

The latest travel restriction follows a week of mounting tensions over media access that began when President Donald Trump announced bans on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico via social media. Trump defended the directive by arguing that media outlets should not be permitted to constantly write negatively or publish what he termed fiction and lies about his administration. Following the ban, the three affected outlets filed a lawsuit in D.C. District Court alongside a motion for a temporary restraining order, asserting that the revocation of their credentials without notice violated First Amendment protections and threatened independent journalism.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled in favor of the media organizations, ordering the White House to immediately restore access. However, compliance proved turbulent. Reporters arriving at the White House described facing immediate roadblocks. According to reporting from CNN, correspondent Betsy Klein and a photojournalist were denied access despite multiple attempts, while MS NOW reported that reporter Laura Barrón-López and a producer were initially turned away and had their passes confiscated. Politico also confirmed that at least one of its reporters was blocked from entering the complex.

Hours after regaining access, correspondents faced further restrictions during high-profile diplomatic events. MS NOW reported that Laura Barrón-López was denied entry to the arrival ceremony on the portico ahead of the state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, with a staffer directing inquiries to communications director Steven Cheung. A CNN producer and correspondent were similarly blocked from the event. Yet, investigations revealed that the anonymous source behind one of those disputed reports was Vice President JD Vance himself, who had spoken on an authorized background call regarding Iran war talks. Vance later defended the administration's actions, comparing Politico's editorial stance to partisan outlets from previous administrations.

The conflict has drawn widespread condemnation from press freedom groups and professional associations, including the National Association of Black Journalists and several other journalism organizations. A broad coalition of news organizations, ranging from Fox News to Vox Media, along with major newspapers and wire services, filed an amicus brief warning that the press ban threatens to deprive the public of timely information. The temporary restraining order remains in effect for 14 days while the court considers a preliminary injunction.
