National Rail warns of widespread disruption and engineering works
Extensive infrastructure projects and station maintenance are causing network-wide service disruptions, delays, and bus replacements across the UK. Passengers are advised to verify travel plans and station status information through the National Rail or Trainslive platforms.
As of Wednesday, 1 July 2026, the UK rail network is experiencing extensive disruption caused by a high volume of infrastructure projects, station improvements, and overnight maintenance. Passengers are advised to verify travel plans via the National Rail portal or the Trainslive platform, both of which provide real-time updates and station status information.
Widespread Engineering Projects
Extensive engineering works are impacting a variety of routes throughout the country. In the north, disruption is affecting services between Newcastle and Morpeth, as well as Edinburgh, while reduced services are reported between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog and between Chester and Wrexham General. Additionally, services between Newport and Ebbw Vale Town are halted for the day. Engineering requirements have also necessitated bus replacements between Corkickle and Whitehaven due to track renewal at Bransty Tunnel, and between Derby and Matlock through 3 July.
Media additions
In the London and South East region, Thameslink has announced that engineering works in the Alexandra Palace area will result in line closures on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Buses will replace trains between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage via Welwyn Garden City, while trains between London and Cambridge, Kings Lynn, and Peterborough will operate on a revised timetable. Some services on these routes will divert non-stop via Hertford North with extended journey times. Thameslink services running between Purley and Horley will face overnight closures from Monday through Friday morning, resulting in the suspension of calls at Earlswood and Salfords, with replacement buses provided by Southern.
Additional engineering-related amendments include:
- Manchester area: Signalling work between Rochdale/Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria is scheduled through 3 July. Late-night buses are replacing trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow or Stoke-on-Trent through 2 July, and between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly through 2 July.
- London St Pancras: Services between London St Pancras International and Corby face amendments through 3 July.
- Western routes: Late-night bus replacements are occurring between Oxford and Worcestershire Parkway/Worcester Shrub Hill through 2 July, and between Bath Spa and Westbury/Frome through 2 July.
- South East: Late-night bus replacements are affecting the Oxted and East Grinstead areas, as well as lines between Haywards Heath and Lewes, Seaford, Polegate, and Eastbourne, through 2 July.
Station Facility and Accessibility Constraints
Maintenance and improvement works are significantly impacting station facilities. At St Pancras International, there is no lift or step-free access to the sub-surface Thameslink platforms (platforms A and B) from now until mid-September due to lift refurbishment. Passengers requiring lift access are advised to travel via Farringdon as an alternative.
Sevenoaks station is experiencing long-term accessibility issues. Lifts serving the footbridge and platforms 1 and 2 are out of order until at least the winter, while lifts between platforms 3 and 4 and the footbridge have been out of service since May. Station staff are available for assistance at Sevenoaks. At Earlswood station, the ticket office is closed and ticket vending machines are out of order.
Long-Term Infrastructure Timeline
Several major projects are set to continue well beyond this week. Works to provide step-free access at Wandsworth Town are scheduled to continue through 11 October. The upgrade at Berrylands station, which involves bus replacements, is slated to last until the end of September. the construction of a new footbridge with lifts at Tackley began in June and is expected to continue until 30 April 2027.
While repair works are ongoing across the network, operators advise passengers to monitor departure boards and station signage for the specific pick-up points of rail replacement services. Because replacement vehicles may be busier than standard train services, commuters are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys. Information regarding compensation, including Delay Repay schemes, remains available through official operator channels for those impacted by these service disruptions.
