Millions of travellers across the United Kingdom are bracing for severe disruption this weekend as the August bank holiday — the final long weekend before Christmas — collides with industrial action, widespread engineering works, and a surge in holiday traffic. The transport network is facing pressure from over 17.6 million projected car journeys and a series of rail strikes that threaten to ground significant portions of the national rail infrastructure.

For those travelling by road, the RAC and transport analytics firm Inrix have issued stark warnings. The South East and South West of England are expected to bear the brunt of congestion. Drivers are advised to anticipate significant hold-ups, particularly on the M5 motorway between Bristol and Devon. On the stretch from junction 15 north of Bristol to junction 23 for Bridgwater, delays of more than 40 minutes are anticipated. Similarly, the M20 in Kent, a critical artery for those heading to Dover or Folkestone for Channel crossings, faces potential delays exceeding 30 minutes. Motorists have been urged to prepare their vehicles for the road and, where possible, adjust travel times to avoid peak congestion windows.

Rail passengers face an even more precarious situation. A strike by members of the RMT union at CrossCountry is causing significant service cancellations. The operator has advised passengers not to travel on Saturday. This disruption is compounded by 261 separate engineering projects managed by Network Rail across the country.

Key Rail Disruptions and Engineering Works

  • East Coast Main Line: Long-distance services between London King’s Cross and Peterborough are suspended on Sunday, affecting LNER and Lumo routes.
  • West Coast Main Line: Avanti West Coast is running a reduced, amended service to and from London Euston. Trains between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International are blocked from Saturday through Monday, forcing diversions and extended journey times.
  • London Northwestern: Services are terminating at Birmingham International to accommodate local works.
  • Regional Impacts: CrossCountry has confirmed no services will run on Saturday, with further cancellations likely on Sunday and Monday.

The cumulative effect of these works, as noted by Helen Hamlin, Network Rail’s chief network operator, is necessary for maintaining the long-term reliability of the network, though she acknowledged the inconvenience this causes during a busy holiday period. While the vast majority of the railway will be running, works on some parts of the network are unfortunately unavoidable, as we complete major work to support a better, more reliable railway that we wouldn’t be able to complete in a normal weekend, Hamlin said via BBC.

The travel chaos is further influenced by the timing of major public events. Large crowds are expected to descend upon the Notting Hill Carnival in London, the Reading and Leeds festivals, and the Creamfields festival in Cheshire.

Looking ahead, weather conditions may provide a brief period of relief before the bank holiday concludes. While the weekend is forecast to be largely dry and warm, with temperatures in central and southern England expected to reach between 23C and 25C, forecasters are monitoring the remains of Hurricane Erin. While the impact remains uncertain, there is a possibility of unsettled weather arriving by Monday. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant regarding both their scheduled routes and the shifting meteorological outlook as they prepare for the journey home.
