Russian missile strike kills 10 at Ukraine defence industry event
A Russian ballistic missile attack on a military training site in the Bucha district has left 10 people dead, prompting a war crimes investigation and an inquiry into potential negligence.
A Russian ballistic missile strike on Friday, 24 July 2026, hit a defence industry event in the Kyiv region, killing at least 10 people and injuring nearly 100 others. The attack occurred during daylight hours at a privately operated military training site located between 12 and 19 miles from the capital in the Bucha district. The bombardment resulted in significant destruction, damaging 27 homes and 44 vehicles in the vicinity of the training ground.
The strike took place while representatives of the Ukrainian defence industry were gathered for the exhibition. The Ukrainian Council of Defence Industry confirmed its representatives were present but clarified that the association did not organise the event itself. According to the Ukrainian air force spokesman, Yuri Ihnat, three ballistic missiles were utilised in the attack, with only one successfully intercepted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the tragedy in a video statement, condemning the decision to hold a weapons exhibition with large crowds under current wartime conditions, particularly near residential areas. He stated that it is absolutely unacceptable to hold such events given the nature of the enemy. Critics, including former defence ministry adviser Serhii Sternenko, suggested that the public nature of the event's promotion allowed for the location to be compromised. Sternenko noted via social media that organising such gatherings in the open air within range of Russian ballistic missiles effectively aids enemy targeting.
In response to the casualties, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, has opened two separate legal proceedings: a war crimes investigation into the Russian attack and a criminal case regarding the potential improper performance of official duties by the organisers. Investigators are tasked with determining who approved the timing, format, and location of the exhibition and whether risk assessments were adequately conducted under martial law. Kravchenko stated that war does not exempt one from responsibility for managerial decisions, adding that the situation requires, in his words, maximum professionalism, caution and awareness.
A spokesperson for the military's general staff stated the gathering occurred at a location outside of its jurisdiction, though they emphasised that any such assembly requires maximum security measures.
Recent Escalation in Cross-Border Attacks
The strike occurred amid an intense period of long-range operations from both sides. On the same day, Ukrainian forces conducted deep-strike operations inside Russia, including:
- Strikes on logistical hubs of Wildberries in St. Petersburg, the Leningrad region, and Simferopol.
- An attack on a military plant in the Kirov region, located roughly 840 miles from the Ukrainian border, which produces components for aircraft and missiles.
The attack on the Kirov facility resulted in six deaths and 26 injuries, according to regional governor Alexander Sokolov. In eastern Ukraine, separate Russian aerial bomb attacks on Friday in the city of Sloviansk killed five people and injured nine, and a later strike on the city in the evening injured 16 people, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin.
The violence in Kyiv occurred one day after President Zelenskyy held meetings with representatives from Raytheon, the US company responsible for producing Patriot air defence systems. Zelenskyy indicated that the discussions focused on the potential for joint production of Patriot interceptors within Ukraine to bolster the nation's defences.
