The death toll from a catastrophic fire at a Bangkok music venue has reached 30 as local authorities transition their focus toward potential criminal negligence. The blaze, which began shortly before midnight on Sunday, occurred at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub, located in the northern sector of the capital. This incident now ranks as the most lethal fire in the city in 17 years.

According to an initial assessment by disaster officials, the fire was likely ignited by an electrical short circuit within an air conditioning unit positioned in the ceiling. The fire spread rapidly across the venue’s overhead structure, which investigators noted may have been lined with combustible foam and decorated with flammable materials such as plastic foliage. These elements likely accelerated the fire's intensity and contributed to the rapid release of toxic smoke.

National police chief Kittiratt Phanphet confirmed on Monday, 13 July 2026, that investigators have formally adopted negligence as the primary theory guiding the inquiry. Authorities are examining whether the establishment—which was licensed as a restaurant rather than a dedicated entertainment venue—failed to maintain adequate safety protocols.

Obstacles to Evacuation

During an inspection of the site, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was informed that a door that was once an exit was bolted, with the proprietor afraid that customers would slip out without paying their bills. The door had a sign that said “staff only” and could open to the outside, but an official told Anutin customers would not have been aware.

Further complicating the evacuation, several exits were found to be either blocked or narrowed. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that beer crates were discovered obstructing an exit near the kitchen, while a table intended for candy sales blocked another pathway. Fire safety expert Busakorn Saensuk, who inspected the aftermath, noted that the absence of illuminated emergency signage likely contributed to the disorientation of the crowd.

Most of the fatalities occurred in windowless bathroom areas at the rear of the building. Officials believe many patrons moved toward the back of the pub, away from the stage where the fire began, in a desperate attempt to find safety, only to become trapped in the windowless restrooms as the venue filled with smoke.

The Human Toll

As of Tuesday, 14 July 2026, authorities have confirmed the identities of 27 deceased victims, with the process of identifying the remaining three ongoing. Among the mourners at the police hospital morgue was a worker from Laos seeking his brother, who had been employed at the pub.

The owner of the establishment, who reportedly sustained serious injuries, is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit. In a social media statement, the pub extended condolences and pledged full cooperation with the fact-finding process.

Recent History of Venue Fires

The incident has drawn comparisons to previous tragedies in Thailand. At least 13 people were killed in a nightclub fire in Chonburi in 2022, while 65 people died in a blaze during a New Year party at a packed Bangkok club in 2009.

What to Watch Next

  • Forensic Results: The ongoing investigation into the specific wiring and decorative materials found in the ceiling remains a priority.
  • Hospital Updates: With 24 individuals remaining in critical condition, authorities are closely monitoring the status of the injured.
